Land of Lakes Quilt Study Group

The Land of Lakes Quilt Study Group (Minnesota) is currently meeting four times a year in May, July, September and November. We meet on Saturdays at various locations in the Minneapolis area or nearby outlying towns. We begin at 10 a.m., bring our own lunches and generally wrap up by 3 p.m. We welcome newcomers! For more detailed information, contact facilitator, Jean Carlton at jeancarlton@comcast.net

In September our study group focused on String Quilts. A brief presentation included technique information (typically use of a foundation) and various common and not-so-commonly used shapes and layout possibilities. A variety of examples were brought for our examination as well as books with photos to study. We felt the topic lent itself well to expanding our study method to include an actual workshop where we would make our own string quilts. After a break for lunch we plugged in - and the scraps began to fly. There is nothing like 'doing' to understand a technique! It seems the scraps do not diminish as you stir and snip. They multiply! Enjoy the photos!

Our May, 2005 meeting was on the simple 9 patch and it's many variations. We explored the various blocks, tops and quilts brought in and worked on sorting them by date; discussing fabrics, block names etc. Of course we always share other items; one of particular interest this time was a bandana detailing parts of a rifle. For minutes and pictures, click here.
