MAQSG

The first meeting of the Studio Quilt Study Group (now called MAQSG) was held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, September 17, 2002 in the barn/studio at the home of Judy Grow.   Ten quilt lovers were present, and only 70% of them were NOT named "JUDY."

After introducing ourselves, telling about our past lives and our present life in quilting, we discussed why we wanted to get together to form this group. Among the reasons discussed were -------

We want to look at wonderful quilts.

We want to be able to talk about them; discuss them with other knowledgeable people and delve deeper into their history, materials and techniques.

We want to talk about what quilt related shows, conferences and other events are going on in the quilt world, either upcoming or hear reviews from others who attended such events.

We wanted to be able to go on field trips as a group and perhaps see collections that could only be seen by appointment.

Some of us mentioned widening our scope beyond quilts, to other areas of historical interest that could touch on our central theme of quilt history.

We want to be connected to a local network of knowledgeable people who could aid us in our own research and who could add to our general knowledge.

We discussed if there should be an agenda for each meeting, a topic for study announced beforehand and then reported on at the meeting. But we agreed that it was probably too early to make such decisions, and that for the present we should just meet for show-and-tell and general discussion.

Noting that we all come to quilts with different interests, we learned that one attendee was solely interested in the visual aspects of the quilts and another was very interested in color psychology.

Someone suggested bringing contemporary fabrics to the group and include them in our discussions since they will be tomorrow's history. We could also look at reproduction fabric, and also discuss contemporary quilts and quiltmakers, or clothing, and how it relates to quilts of the same period.

Along with the show and tell, restoration techniques and accepted conservation practice could be discussed as they relate to the quilt on display.

We did definitely decide that we would wear no white gloves, but make sure our hands were freshly washed, and that we would allow photography as a general rule, for home study. Any quilt owner could ask for no photographs for particular quilts.
