M.O.K.A. Quilt Study Group
Covering the states of MO, OK, KS & AR. On Saturday, 28 February 2004, a group of 38 quilt history enthusiasts from Arkansas, Missouri, and Kansas met in Joplin Missouri. Charlotte Enfield and Edith Idleman organized the meeting for the purpose of forming a quilt study group. This new study group chose the name "M.O.K.A. Quilt Study Group" (using the first letter of the four state area it will cover: Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Arkansas). This group chose to meet quarterly. At this first meeting, selected second and third quarter 19th century quilts were studied. Nancy Hornback gave an informative talk on quilts of this time period. Show and Tell brought forth more wonderful quilts from this period. Basket Quilts was the theme for the next meeting held on May 1st 2004 in Joplin Missouri. Carol Huisman prepared the talk on basket quilts. Then the 43 women broke up into groups to study five quilt pieces: an applique basket quilt, and appliqued quilt coverlet, a mosaic basket quilt, a pieced machine quilted basket quilt, and an embroidered basket quilt. All the quilts studied appeared to be from the second quarter of the 20th century. The next M.O.K.A. Quilt Study Group meeting will be held in Wichita Kansas.
